I know some photographers who swear by Delta 3200 in medium format but won't use it for 35mm because of the grain issue. It's just a personal preference, but now that Kodak is out of the fast film game Delta 3200 is the only product with a legitimately high iso in any film format. It's supposed to be an iso1000 film that can be pushed, and I think that's about right. It allows hand held night photography without the excessive contrast from too much pushing of a slow film.
I agree that tripods are the best option at night but I just can't warm up to the idea of walking around with a tripod. My loss
