I'm amazed by the intriguing shapes proffered by the surrounding urban landscape. There is always something interesting to see no matter where you are, if you are on the lookout!
This is a very nice study in light and shadow. The shadow of the link fence in number 1 made me think of the fish scale pattern that you find in some Asian ceramics and the use of vertical as well as multiple horizontal surfaces adds a lot to to a simple concept.
Number two is nice for the pattern, but also for the texture of the road / sidewalk. Almost like a high grain image, but the few scattered leaves are sharp.
Good eye to capture and present this series. Either you were walking or the traffic was very slow...
B&W was also a good choice for this group of images.
...although in Los Angeles traffic, sometimes walking is faster than driving! Thanks for the kind words, and #2 is probably my favorite. It was a totally lucky shot. The others had some modicum of thought behind them.
My avatar photo was taken on a trip to Hawaii last year. I laughed when I first saw the sign at a botanical garden on the big island of Hawaii, but realized the sign was necessary when one of my traveling companions was nearly brained by a huge mango falling from 100 feet up!
for a photography class when somebody always complaints that they don't a "worthy" subject or that to take good photos one must travel. "Common" objects giving us a show of patterns and how to use light without resorting to complication. Very nice.
I appreciate your comments. I love how you similarly showcase everyday scenes (Your pix are much better than mine, of course!) and find the beauty and brilliance in the world around you.
It is indeed impressive by how much photogenic things we are surrounded if only we manage to break out of our daily routine and actually look around.
I do like #1 for the melodic quality of the depicted pattern. My absolute favourite, though, is #2. The lines painted by the shadow look almost like airbrushed strokes. How subtle!
I appreciate your nice thoughts on my amateur efforts. As I'm immersing myself more into photography I start to notice more of the world around me. I live in a city, and I often take mental pictures of the structures around me, in hopes that I'll have my camera with me at some later date in order to record the pictures for real. It's amazing how light and shadow create compelling images from everyday things like fences and gates.
While I also like #2 and its sense of mystery (and appreciate its status as a "lucky" shot in the sense of "shoot, don't think too much") I particularly enjoy #1 and its regularity (I almost said symmetry, but of course it's really not symmetric). Probably says more about how my brain is wired than anything else.
Did you crop #1? I kept trying to imagine what it would look like with more of the right side of the image cropped out -- put my hand up to the screen a few times, and mostly concluded that I liked the way you have it.
I cropped #1, but only very, very slightly. I think I had just a teeny bit of debris in the frame at the top of the shot originally that I edited out. It was such a nice day to be out walking around, and these photographic reminders are just the icing on the cake...along with everyone's nice comments!
