I spy at the nola.com Trivia Forum a discussion of "Batture Dwellers" -- people who set up a place along the river between the levee and the river proper. Due to the ebb and flow of the tide, few of the batture dwellings lasted long but resilient people who loved the water kept setting up structures there. My great grandfather was one of them. Old Ed lived a stone's throw away from the river at Leake Avenue on Dublin Street but was happiest (so I'm told) at his "camp" over the levee.
