I was always fascinated with the ways early explorers travelled these areas. One such portage was used to meet Les Voyageurs who canoed from Canada via the Mississippi to a location called L'anse aux Outardes near present day New Sarpy, LA. They then portaged to either Bayou Labranche or Bayou Trepagnier to Lake Pontchartrain and then through the Rigolets to Lake Borgne and the Gulf. From there they travelled along the coast protected by barrier islands to the French settlement of Fort Maurepas near what is now Ocean Springs, MS.

The LeMoyne bros. were shown a shorter, easier route to Baton Rouge rather than battle the Mississippi River current. The local Native Americans showed them how to use Bayou Manchac which led from Lake Maurepas to just South of Istrouma (Houmas/Choctaw name of the B.R. area). "Manchac" means "back way".

I did some time in that area. I was a contracted petroleum inspector for Goodhope Refinery, GATX and Shell. My "office" was at Frenchy's Bar at Prospect Road and River Road. I remember a conversation over beer and alligator sauce piquant along the lines of your question. "New Sarpy? Where's Old Sarpy? Was there ever a just plain Sarpy?"
That very marker and I went around and around once. It used to be standing on the levee side of the road across from the New Sarpy Post Office. Some road improvement work was done in the early 1990s and the marker disappeared. I contacted Melinda Schwegmann (Lt. Gov. at the time) and yada, yada, no one could find the sign. I'm a member of the River Road Historical Society and felt it was my duty to do something. Between myself, Nancy Robert and Irene Tastet of Destrehan Plantation we pressured the right people into having a new sign made and placed in position. The last time I drove through New Sarpy the marker was missing! Here we go again!
