Dick Russ was an interesting man with great intellect who loved stimulating conversation. He surrounded himself with equally intelligent people and it showed yesterday at his memorial service. The service was a wonderful celebration of his life. More than 300 of Dick's family and friends gathered at the West Presbyterian Church in downtown Binghamton to pay tribute to the old ball coach. The mourners were treated to an interesting, compelling, poignant, thoughtful and very funny memorial service. I'm not sure if West Pres has ever hosted one quite like that! His daughter Ann was the final speaker, her eulogy bore witness to his intellect and it was quite clear that he had passed some really smart genes to her. Grandson Travis was equally impressive and spoke with great diction and composure well beyond his years (24). Son Richard and friend Doc Nash had the congregation roaring in laughter and wiping tears. Former players and other family members also shared remembrances. The service began with a beautiful hymn from daughter Ann's friend and Dick's nephew Bobby played the guitar and provided an inspirational rendition of Amazing Grace. Collectively, an amazing tribute! It was definitely a "Holy Sh*t" tribute!!! I'm sure that Dick would have loved it! |
