Vincents (Mandeville, Uptown)

April 8 2005, 11:51 AM

We've been to the Mandeville location and the St. Charles location several times. They're both ok. Mandeville is prettier than St. Charles, and they are nicer to people who are not regulars.

The food is acceptable. David loves the corn and crab bisque, I hate it. They can do good lamb. They are completely uninspired with side dishes - most come with a dish of pathetic broccoli and one of boring pasta. (little tiny dishes, that is, not communal ones)

I put 2 dollar signs, but really, a dinner for two with a $35 bottle of wine can set you back. I'd rather spend the same money at Nuvolari, La Provence, etc and get a way better meal.

Vincent's on St. Charles Ave.

July 13 2006, 10:27 PM

Played tourist today, supporting the local economy while spending the day with my out-a town sister-in-law and mother.  Had lunch at Vincent's before heading over to Magazine Street for some browsing of the shops.

Lunch was delicious.  Started with the crab and corn soup (always got'a have that at Vincent's).

Ordered the stuffed shrimp with crabmeat/cream topping (actually just more of the soup base, I think, with lots more crabmeat and it's wonderful).  I've had this before -- it includes three fairly large "balls" comprised of large shrimp, stuffing, & crabmeat and it's way too much food for me to eat in one sitting (it's also incredibly rich) so my mother and I split the dish.  When it came out, the chef "added another shrimp ball" so that we'd each have two.  Very nice gesture, however we packed up two balls and then some to take home.

Sister-in-law had the Italian Salad and raved about it. I had a taste of the house bleu cheese dressing (served on the side without a special request).  It's a garlicky mixture of cheese floating in olive oil and (apparently) balsamic vinegar and it is excellent.

The bill was just under $45.00 for the three of us (we drank water and -- gasp! -- endless amounts of iced tea).  It was one of the best $15.00 dollar meals I've had in a very long time.  In fact, it was one of the best meals I've had lately.
