Delmonico was fabulous last night. They noted it was an anniversary, gave us a corner table (although I would have preferred a window one - but it was jammed with realtors and none was available when we were seated). There really wasn't an off moment. They brought us a complimentary amuse-bouche of a small pressed pasta cake veined with pesto and topped with a shrimp. Appetisers: David had crab cake, I had escargots. The waiter (one of three that were constantly in attendance - no staffing problems here) made a big point of telling me that they were "basil-fed" escargots - they were basilly enough but could have used some more garlic. I had a mixed green salad and David had a beautiful dark andouille gumbo - I bet if the realtors had it they would have found it too spicy, but it was fabulous. Entrées: David had suckling pig , which was surprisingly but deliciously constructed in a tall square - either minced or pulled, hard to tell, but the most fantastic flavour. I had lobster bolognese, a dish that was thankfully not as rich as it could have been, flavourful, with neat "calamari pasta" - wide ribbons of pasta somehow cut into circles that looked like calamari. Dessert: David had a pumpkin bread pudding, excellent. I had (was compelled to have, because of the description) "pain perdu stuffed with sweet chèvre accompanied by bitter green tomato marmalade" (or something like that). It was fantastic - came with a little dollop of ice cream and was a wonderful marriage of flavours. Oh, they put candles in our desserts, for the anniversary. We had an '02 Chateau Giscours Margaux with dinner which we enjoyed tremendously. And I had a glass of champagne to start. We blew the bank.
