The Sicilian café & lounge in the 700 block of St. Charles Avenue opened today, December 5.
A co-worker and I went, and they said they weren't really open, but they were inviting patrons in for a "family style" meal, gratis.
We started, 20 minutes later, with bruschetta. Bland, but the tomatoes were pretty good.
Another 20 minutes-plus, and he brought out aranchini, or fried rice balls as the waiter explained it to the table next door. Very good. The main course-- by now we'd been there over an hour--was ziti with what we New Orleaneans might call daube, but I didn't catch what they called it. Excellent. The pasta was a tiny bit
undercooked for me, but still perfectly fine. The meat was well cooked, and the sauce nicely spiced. They offered dessert, ciocollatto
cappalacci according to the sign on the wall, but we declined courteously.
There were four or five other tables. One couple left after the
bruschetta, and another person at one of the tables left early, too. I
don't think anyone stayed for dessert. It was ssooo sloooow. They were apologizing and inviting people to try again tomorrow when they promised to be better organized. I'll pass mañana, but I'll give them another shot in a couple weeks or so.
