Vitamin D
by May (no login)
Hello,
Recently, I heard that pediatricians start to recommend vitamin D supplements for breastfed babies. How come? I thought breastmilk contains everything a baby needs?
Yes, breastmilk contains everything a baby needs. The reason that some pediatricians recommend these supplememnts is, that in some babies, who do not get enough sun exposure (which makes the skin produce vitamin D) have a risk of not getting enough vitamin D. Today, it is recommended that we and especially babies, do not get a lot of sunshine. If we go outdoors, we should apply sunscreen to prevent skindamage and skin cancer later on. And this use of sunscreen also blocks the production of vitamin D in the skin. So not the requirements for vitmain D have changed, not the amount of vitamin D in breastmilk has changed, but the amount of time we can safely stay outside without damaging our skin.
Pediatricians will recommend the use of vitamin D on an individual basis, depending on time spend outdoors and skincolor.
