Each team had players who did not dress for every game. They were to be found in the stands doing stats and then reporting to the coaches at the end of the periods. In most cases only the starting goalies played.
The other thing to consider is that some players have specific roles on their teams and it is the only job they have, for instance on the penalty kill.
As to moral, these teams use systems much more than junior teams do and you must fit into the system. Everyone fights for ice time. You must put out to be there. Please remember they are paying you to be there, even on the Canadian teams you are not paying to play in any way. Montreal is expensive and UofA paid for the flight and the hotel! So if the coach says your sitting, guess what, your sitting and you had better get your head around that before you go off to college.
