| Well I went out to look at the Jeep trans, armed with a few tools and a spare toploader cover plate. After removing the Jeep top turret shifter I put on the Toploader cover, and it fit correctly except for one bolt hole so this trans is obviously in the same family. Counting revolutions of the input and output shaft gave a first gear ratio of 35-1/2 turns to 10, which agrees pretty closely with the published value of 3.52 to 1. There is also a 3.82 first gear in some of these transmissions, according to published information.
Anyhow, the internals didn't appear too wrecked, the second gear's synchro teeth were well worn but better than those in the OD that I have in my car now. The reverse gear teeth were quite bad but hopefully this part is the same as the Toploader or SROD gear.
The trans was only fifty bucks and the seller threw in a parts five speed trans as a bonus! Now all I need is spare time to work on transmissions.
NB: The Jeep main case has the wide Toploader front pattern, with a non-Ford pattern on the rear of it. |
