I've got an old column shift Ford powered by a 1981 flat tappet 5.0 SB w/ a 4150 Holley that has the Summit Racing® Throttle Valve Corrector SUM-700202, the ridiculous Lokar KD2AODHT TV cable and the incredibly weak Lokar SRK-4000 Throttle Cable Bracket mounted on the carb.
The cable is attached to an AOD (tagged PKA AS20 F3AP BA [1993 full sized Ford pass car?]) trans that's attached to a silly open 8 inch rear with 4:10 gears.
I got the car on the road two weeks ago and have been hassling with the TV cable adjustment ever since.
First adjustment "by the book method" was with a trans pressure gauge 35PSI TV pressure (in neutral, warm) and Lokar spacer block; Result: only shifted under light throttle and slipped like a mo-fo going into high/OD. Half throttle was worse- no OD at all.
Next adjustment: "neutral cable/assembly line method": carb @ idle position in neutral (cold trans) adjusted cable with no slack or pull on the TV lever. Result: light throttle stacked shifts (in 3rd @22mph) and only went into high/OD after throttle was backed off, about 40mph. No kick down function.
Third adjustment: "WOT Throttle/WOT throttle valve cable". Mash pedal to WOT and pull TV cable to full travel and lock. Result: Terrible soft stacked shifts 1-2 @ 8mph; was in 3rd by 14mph slipped like nobody's business going intohigh/OD on anything but light throttle and slipped every single time going into high/OD, just like the trans was completely cooked. Very disappointing. And scary for the Mrs.
I had begun to hate my 50 year old car and its Automatic overdrive transmission.
Last night I found this forum.
Final adjustment: 4PSI TV pressure @ idle (warm engine/trans, neutral); Just for grins I stuck the stupid gauge block in the cable and checked the TV pressure; it was 39PSI.
Results:
Light throttle (like a consumer) 1-2 @ 12mph with a nice 'slip bump'. 2-3 @ 30mph with slip-bump. 3-4 @ 48mph with a very nice slip-bump.
Half throttle; 1-2 9mph, 2-3 23mph, 3-4 40mph. All shifts were nice crisp w/ very slight slip-bump.
I can't go full throttle because my stupid TV cable won't pull that far without bending my shiny chrome Lokar cable bracket. And my TV cable is probably too short anyway.
Any solutions?
Does anybody (besides the Ford factory) make a decent TV cable/bracket set up?
Everyone raves about the Lokar stuff but I really am not all that impressed with it.
And is there a VB/shifft kit that will raise my TV pressure @ idle without pulling the cable?
Did anyone really read through all of this?
What a great forum!
Thanks
