"During the rebuild, I took out the large rear ball bearing in the tail housing for inspection. I thought that I had put it back in backwards and was driving the output shaft too far forward. This turned out not to be the case."
There is a washer on both sides of the rear bearing. One is thicker.
If you have it in the wrong position it could push the output shaft forward.
