I have a 2002 Ford Escape XLT. MFD 03/02. It is a V6, 2wheel drive, front wheel drive. It has 208,963 miles on it. The shifter is on the column not the floor. It is an Automatic Transmission. My wife bought it used with 190,000+ miles on it.
I fired it up one day and headed down the road, it seemed to be stuck in a lower gear in other words it did not want to shift thru to the higher gears. I pulled it over and put it in park. I waited awhile and tried to go, but nothing. I had it car trailored home. I can start the car but it does not move in any gear. There has never been any indication that anything was wrong, ie. noises, slipping etc..
I fired it up and let it run for 30 minutes today. Moved the shifter thru every gear. I checked the fluid and found that it is way over full. We have never added any transmission fluid since we bought it with 190,000+ miles on it.
So my first question is what model of transmission is in this thing, and where can I find indepth information on it? The transmission pan faces the front of the vehicle instead of on the bottom? The ID Sticker on the drivers side door jam is faded, so information is sketchy.
My second questions is there a chance that something electrical (solenoid etc.) has went bad. Shift Linkage?
My third question is where would I go to get good information on removal and rebuild?
It is in excellent shape otherwise and the engine runs great. My wife loves the car, so I'm leaning toward fixing it if it doesn't have the potential of being an on going money pit.
Any and all information / opinions will be appreciated.
