That sounds like a low fluid level. Full runing level is even with the pan/case connection.
Run the stick down along the tube and see where it is.
Also. As it has been a 6 year process the breather tube / vent may be clogged with mud daubers.
If it is clogged the fluid will show high on the stick yet be very low.
The vacuum lines are't very big to start with, 3/16 is about it.
