As the title indicates, I have been experencing an intermittant transmission whine when the engine (390) is started over the past several months. Initially, the whine would disappear once the shifter was placed into gear. This week the whine continues even after being placed into gear. There is also a slight delay between moving the shifter into gear and the actual engagement. Outside ambient temperatures have been in the 90's this past week...not sure if it is a contributing factor.
Transmission history is unknown prior to 2000. In the intervening 9 years I have put approximately 35,000 miles on it with periodic servicing including fluid and filter changes at a local independent shop twice. The shop uses Mercon III fluid. Fluid appears red and does not smell burnt. Slight dark deposits (clutch material?) on the dipstick.
From my description, is there a concensus here about the root cause of these symptoms? Could the cure be something as simple as an adjustment or does it sound more serious such as pump seals leaking or some other components wearng out?
Thanks in advance for any insight offered.
Regards, Jeff
