I have a 1970 F-100 that was my grandfather's. He bought it brand new in 1970. It has a 302 and a C4 right now ( 150000 miles and niether have been touched). My question is "Is there an AOD Tranny that will bolt right in without any mods to the cross member or driveshaft? If not wold it be worth it to try and put a OD in my tranny or a C6 and keep trucking?
If the truck is nice enough to warrent the extra work to put the AOD in
2)TV cable hookup
The rest is cake really, since it is truck, you have alot of room to work. However, since it is the F100 Twin I-beam, it has a massive crossmember that is rivited to the frame - you can drop this part and bolt it back, or pull the engine....these are the easiest options when you have a C6 in there....I bet the C4 comes out pretty easy, but the AOD might be a squeez to fit back...I don't know.
If you just want to gas the truck around and don't care much about MPG...keep the C4
I just pulled an AOD out of my 71 F100 to go back with a c4. Mine was a 302 3 speed column from the start. I pulled the straight drive and dropped a c6 in it first. No real problems doing that except drive shaft lenghts.
I just slid the rear support to where it needed to be and bolted it down. The holes were alreaady there.
If a truck came from the factory with an automatic it usually has a bolted in front cross-member. If it was a straight drive then most of the times the front is rivited in.
When I changed it to an AOD it was just as easy but I used a Lokar TV cable.
I also went from a 2 piece driveshaft to a single piece.
George, Sorry for jumping your thread. I installed a 460/C6 in a 66 Short and it was a bolt in deal. I was able to use all Ford stuff and did not even move the crossmember. A C6 or an AOD will fit your truck easily. But, a C4 will be easiest.
I pulled a c-6 to install the AOD. I was hoping for an increase in MPG. I got a decrease. lol
I had it behind a mild 351w with 3.70 gear and averaged 13 mpg. I even tried a 3.25 and got 11 mpg. When I had a 3 speed column and 3.25 I could average 17-18 mpg so I was dissapointed in the AOD. Nothing I did tuning wide wise helped.
A buddy needed an AOD so I figured it was a good time to sell it and try my hand rebuilding a c4.
Thanks for the info. The c4 is not broke, it just leaks a little fluid. But I guess that is what 36 years will do for it. I was just trying to get MPG. The truck has 3.50 gears and does about 2600 rpms at 60 mph.
