Jeep gears in toploader

I read somewhere about the possibility of using Jeep gearsets in a Toploader, and am hoping to find out what Jeep transmission this would be. Would it be a T176?

I wish to do this to get the super low first gear of the Jeep, which is 3.52 or 3.82 I believe.

They appear to be interchangeable

Well I went out to look at the Jeep trans, armed with a few tools and a spare toploader cover plate. After removing the Jeep top turret shifter I put on the Toploader cover, and it fit correctly except for one bolt hole so this trans is obviously in the same family. Counting revolutions of the input and output shaft gave a first gear ratio of 35-1/2 turns to 10, which agrees pretty closely with the published value of 3.52 to 1. There is also a 3.82 first gear in some of these transmissions, according to published information.

Anyhow, the internals didn't appear too wrecked, the second gear's synchro teeth were well worn but better than those in the OD that I have in my car now. The reverse gear teeth were quite bad but hopefully this part is the same as the Toploader or SROD gear.

The trans was only fifty bucks and the seller threw in a parts five speed trans as a bonus! Now all I need is spare time to work on transmissions.

NB: The Jeep main case has the wide Toploader front pattern, with a non-Ford pattern on the rear of it.

The Jeep T176, T177, T178 and the Ford RTS transmissions are variations of the Ford RUG transmission with many of the parts, including gears, identical.

Strange why vendors don't sell these gears

Checking out the Offroad/Jeep websites, I see they carry gears for these transmissions. Since these different gears and gearsets are available thence, it seems odd that the Toploader vendors don't bother carrying them. It would seem like an opportunity to expand their product line.

Good old AMC

Thanks for the info sdjiricek and others. AMC was always interesting in their sourcing of parts, due of course to their small size not letting them tool up to make a lot of items.

The T150 was a variation of the RAN family of transmissions. The RAN family looks almost identical to the RAT family of 3 speeds, but none of the parts interchange. The RAT family case is about 3/4" longer and the guts correspondingly larger than the RAN family.

RAT vs RAN

May 14 2008, 3:08 AM

Thanks for the info on these trannies. I never new they were that different. Are they both considered 3.03 transmissions?

One more question about the Jeep trans. The one I picked up is from a 4WD so has no usable mainshaft (aka output shaft). I am hoping my toploader or SROD mainshaft will fit.

Did those Jeep trans ever come in 2WD versions, with a proper extension housing and mainshaft?
