clutch pedal height adjustment (70 mustang)

I just installed a 4 spd toploader in my '70 mustang (conversion from C4) , now the clutch pedal is too far up.
Do I need to mount anything extra to stop the excessive pedal travel which is not already there on my pedal assembly ?
I have tried to find me an exploded view of such but was unable to find one of the right year.

Any help appreciated, Thanks.

Mitch.

Clutch adjustment

This is from the 1969 Ford shop manual so I hope it helps. 1, Disconnect clutch return spring, 2, Loosen release lever rod and adj nut, 3, move clutch release lever rearward until it lightly contacts release lever fingers, 4 adjust rod length until it seats in release lever pocket, 5 sais to use the right feeler gauge, then tighten lock nut, 6, install clutch return spring

Did you use pedals out of 70 donor car or some other year?

Clutch assembly (Photo added)

May 11 2008, 8:23 AM

The pedals I used (which I bought 2nd hand from a parts supplier) are indeed from a 1970 donor car.
The assist spring is in place and pushes the pedal right against the stop (white arrow)
Now my pedal is way too far up, I can't even reach it without my knee hitting the steering wheel and far from in line with the brake pedal. I'm absolutely puzzled how to adjust this excessive height.
Is it always suppose to rest against the top stop that you see in the pic ?

Also as you can see (red arrow) there's this little bracket which I haven't mounted yet, does this have anything to do with the clutch pedal or it's height ? Could anyone tell me what it's purpose is ?

Picture is just an example and not taken from my actual assembly.

Thanks.

Mitch.

Clutch pedal

The Clutgh height is preset by the factory by welding the bumper stop in the correct position. The little bracket you point to is just for support and will not adjust anything. Your rubber bumper does not apear to be the correct thickness. This is a very common problem with thess pedal assymbles These bumpers are not reproduced yet and definetly affect the pedal height. Lastly, worst case is that the clutch pedal stop has been rewelded in the wrong spot. It is very common for the factory weld to break and they get welded back incorrectly. This can be fixed, but you will have to pull the pedal out.

Pedal support

May 12 2008, 10:44 AM

Thanks for your help Steve, that is the information I needed.
I will try to solve the problem by relocating the stop after aligning the rest of the clutch components and adjust it to the proper height and needed free play.
The weirdest fact was that I thought that the assemblies from 70 were all the same and that they were all prepared for mounting a clutch pedal. I bought a 2nd hand 1970 support that was just like the one in the pic but just yesterday, I noticed when mounting the clutch pedal on my original mounted support that this one didn't have the stop with the rubber bumper at all. It just hits the support itself and there is no hole to attach a rubber bumper.

You can also bolt a gizmo to the pedal to allow for the extra clearance.
