i have a art carr c-6 in my mustang ii with a blown stroker motor. trans has reverse pattern and transbrake. driving the other day i noticed trans temp gauge was about 200 degrees f. this is a little higher than i have seen it but it was hot out and i was returning from a 20 mile trip. about 2 blocks from my house something smelled kind of funny, i looked out my rear view mirror and saw smoke. as i passed through a intersection i also saw a streak of atf on the pavement. the trans was shifting perfectly and i had not been beating on it that night. i pulled on to a side street and shut the motor down (did not want it to burst into flames from the oil on the exhaust system. there was oil dripping everywhere from the bellhousing back. my buddy came and towed me home and i put the car up on stands. the convertor and bellhousing interior were completely dry. all the cooler lines are tight, the dipstick tube seal if fine....where did all the oil come from? it is positively atf as it is red. oil level on the trans was low after the dump(but not burned)...please help........mike

The oil is probably coming from the vent.
If you fill the C6 to the full mark when cold it will sometimes burp when it gets hot. 200F is hot - temp should be kept at 165 to 175F. Add some cooling for that C6 and it will live a lot longer.

it has a electric fan type cooler mounted under the rear of the car. i have seen temps aroud 190 but usually never higher. could i have overfilled the trans and when it got this hot, it burped out the vent? have never had this problem before with a c-6. it made a awful mess under the car from the leakage and left a trail down the road.

Maybe one of your cooler lines got kinked... or perhaps you somehow got a plug in one of the lines...

Plugged cooler lines won't cause it to overflow. If a cooler line was plugged it would lose lubrication to the rear of the transmission and ruin it but it would not overflow.

Yes, it is likely an overfull transmission.

This is still a strange problem, apparently this happened out of the blue. If a line got kinked it could have caused overheating... an increase in pressure... and leaks. I don't mean to argue, just list a possibility. It is a good idea anyway to check the cooler lines. Best of luck, Carlos.

it did happen out of the blue. nothing has been changed recently that could have caused this. the lines are not kinked or pinched anywhere. if the line to or from the cooler was plugged or restricted i would have burned up the trans by now.

Hmm... well then I give up. I don't know what else could give you a rise in temperature and fluid spitting from the transmission out of the blue one random day... maybe someone else here with more experience can tell you. Best of luck.

ok, i ran the car for 15 minutes in the garage, not a drip. i drove less than 1/4 mile from the house and dumped another quart. it appears to be coming from the passenger side. could i have blown a seal on the servo cover? there is so much atf under the whole car and trans that i cannot pinpoint where it's coming from. the inside of the bellhousing is still dry.

Mike,
Did you ever check and correct the fluid level?
That would be your first step. If that has been done then the filter or valve body might be loose and allowing the pump to suck air. Extra heat can come from a converter that is failing or failed but you would normally notice a drop in performance if a converter was bad.
