Hi, I have a 2000 Mustang with and OD and 3.8 V6.

Last week it started shifting out of second into 3rd late.
It wouldnt shift into 3rd till around 40 mph.

It didnt do it all of the time.

This week it would not shift out of second at all.

If you go up to 50 mph or so and let off the gas it feels like it is freewheeling.

The fluid, torque convertor and filter were changed recently.




It had a problem 3 or 4 months ago shifting from 1st into second late, it wouldnt shift into second until exactly 20 mph.

It was intermittent
Changing the fluid cleared it up right away.

I am going guess you broke the input shaft or the direct clutch has failed.
It is possible the shift solenoid is not working - you can confirm this if you have a trans shop diagnose it with a stand alone controler....don't fall for the it needs a rebuild advice until they proove it.
