Hello I have a 71 F100 that I'm going to be upgrading to a AOD trans soon. So I went hunting for a good used AOD & found one from a 93 f150 w/a 5.0 engine last week. I've looked at many posts & talked to some tranny shops & they all said get a AOD from a 92-93 truck, which should be the strongest stocker to buy.
Everything checked out good with the trans, I was happy-I thought. Now when I was degreasing it the other day I noticed on the tailshaft that there is no provision to insert the speedo cable into!!! There is a hole there that is cast in the case for one but it does not go thru to the inside. I went to Ford to look it up and they couldn't help me about the tailshaft problem-they want part #'s or pics. So what's the deal with this AOD? I've seen many AOD's and they all have the speedo hole in the tailshaft, so how would this vehicle's speedometer work then? Hmmmmm. I will try to get all the part #'s I can on the trans and post them next time, maybe anyone out there familiar with this? ***NOTE this is not a AODE or 4R70W trans, by the way. Thanks...
The AOD was not in trucks after 89 I don't think
The AODE was...I could be wrong, but if the trans has a electrical connector on the shift linkage, and a white connector on the passenger side, it is a AODE - AND REQUIRES ELECTRONICS.
BUT YOU SAID IT WAS AOD, so, sounds like you need a different AOD tailshaft housing, the longer variety. Try www.wittrans.com
i have never seen a tailshaft that did not have the hole, a pic would be cool
Yes trucks and van used the AOD to 93 however most had a PSOM type speedo which ran off the rear axle ABS sensor instead of the tranny. Should be able to get a car extension housing of the correct length to get you going.

If it's a 93 or earlier, it isn't an E, it's a normal AOD which will have an output shaft speedo drive gear no matter what extension housing is on there. If it was an AODE from a car, it would likely have the speedo hole since speedo gears were used into the late 90's. If it is an AOD as he said, the output shaft gear should be there.

I'm not sure what you speak of but the AOD will have a 7 or 8 tooth output shaft speedo drive gear. The 71 truck likely has a C6 with a 6, 7 or 8 tooth as well. If both have a 7 tooth, no change. Just have to what each tranny has and go from there. As far as I remember, the truck AOD's will still have normal output shafts with speedo drive gears even if the extension housing has no speedo hole. However, with Ford, there might be some exceptions.

I have never seen a output shaft in the AOD that did NOT have speedo splines.
AFter 02 they started to phase out speedo splines in the 4R70W...this shaft WILL fit into an AODE just fine, if it was rebuilt or something.
The likely hood you have a C4/C5/C6/AOD or even AODE that does not have speedo splines is crazy, and I would like to see a pic.
Now, there is a guy on the forums that has a AOD tailhousing with NO speedo hole in the casting...that is also rare to me.
Blake, let us know something. Did you pull the extension housing off to check the output shaft? It isn't from a 4x4 is it? If so, there's no speedo gear on it.

Never have seen an AOD with a tail housing with a speedo blank. However, starting about 1993 Ford did start using tails without finished speedo holes across a wide range of transmissions so I would assume that it is quite likely that some very late AODs had them.
What I would like to know is the length of the tail and the casting number on it.
