I have a C4 in a '74 Bronco. I was attempting to remove the governor and distributor by removing the output shaft but it only came out about 1.5 inches or so and then stopped. I then decided to just remove the governor and attempted to reinsert the output shaft but am unable to. I goes in about half an inch which is far enough to turn both the low and reverse drum and the forward gear train assembly but still has about an inch to go. I assume it just needs to align with the inner splines properly but can't seem to do this. Is there a trick here or do I need to pull the trany and stand it on end to get the splines aligned?
If you were able to pull the shaft out from the back that far without pulling the pump of the trans, then you yanked the snapring off inside, and possibly lost a thrust washer as well - your should pull the trans apart and reseat all the parts.
