I have a CJ C6 that's been rebuilt with TCI components including a TCI 5000 stall converter and TCI trans brake with Frank's mods to fix the overunning shifts. It also has the AOD low gear setup 2.72/154, large cooler and TCI deep pan with extended pickup.
I recently changed the fluid and put in dexron/mercon fluid in it. I've done some research and it seems that opinions are split about in half as to wether to use this fluid or type F.
My problem is that on the first pass at the track it shifts into second and almost emmediately the shift light comes on again and shifts into third. The trans shifts via a shiftnoid set at 6000. After the first pass it seems to hold second better and by the third pass it's ok. One thing I forgot to mention is that the engine is on solid motor mounts and so is the trans. This is a backhafed and tubbed 68 mustang with a 12 point cage on ladder bars and coilovers.
Does the trans shift into second via the servo and a band? If so, could the use of the solid trans mount be putting the case in a bind therefore hindering the servo from working properly until the case warms up and expands? I ordered a rubber trans mount and I'm going to install it and see if it takes care of the problem. Should I also adjust the band and go back to type F fluid? Is that adjustment 120 inch pounds and back off 1 turn or is it less for racing applications. Would appreciate your imputs as I'm not a tranny expert. Frank helped me last time with the trans brake mod. I really appreciate that as I will any help on my current problem. Thanks in advance, George
hello im curently running a c 4 and experienced similar problems. i found that if i was to make a drive by pass it would allow the fluid to warm up. also one thing to check is the line presure to low is not good and to high is also bad. you may want to check you drum and band you may have already burnt the band somewhat. one extemly important adjustment is the second gear detent alighnment with the shifter detent all other detent corelation is less important.if this is out a tad pit it will not allow second gear shift proper.
This week I will install a rubber type trans mount and I'm going to check the band adjustment. Someone here said to adjust to 120" and back one turn but I checked a book and it calls for turning back out 1 1/2 turns. I'm going to set it at 1 1/2 turns out to make sure it's not grabbing. I will also check the 2nd gear detent. That might be a problem since my trans shifts with a shiftnoid. it may be getting pulled further or not to the detent. Thanks for your info.
