Have a 1959 f-100 with a 292. Wondering what my transmission options are. The truck originally had 223 with 3 speed on column, but someone previous to me put the 292 with a 4 speed T-98 witch sheared the pin that holds the shift lever for 1st and 2nd Gear.Do I have any options for a better hyway geared transmission. Are there 3 speed or automatic options? Thanks for any responce

I'm not familiar with the 292 engine.... What bolt pattern (bellhousing) does it have?

I "think" it has a pattern similar to the FE (390 etc) engine. If so... maybe a C6 could be made to work.

If you want overdrive, there is an adapter bellhousing to use an AOD behind an FE. I'm not sure if this would fit the 292 without mods.

For manual shift trannys there are many 5 and 6 speed units that might be adaptable.... research needed...

Check with Quick Times bellhousings. They may have something.

For a better highway geared transmission you will need an overdrive.

You are going to need adapters for that.

272 - 292 - 312 engines share the same bolt pattern.

Other than that the only other options are a different rear end ratio or gear vendors overdrive.
But you are talking major $$$'s there.
