Upper Iowa River is my favorite river - prefer to paddle it in the early spring when the water is higher and it is less crowded.

Lake McBride is my favorite lake. lots of sail boats, a few small fishing boats, and its canoe friendly.

paddle on...

I like the UIR during the right times of the year. But it can be kind of crowded at times. I really enjoy the Turkey as far lake paddling, I would have to say Brushy.

I float the turkey, wapsi, and maquoketa quite a bit. Caught limit of walleyes monday on the Maquoketa north of canton. Caught 8 nice walleyes between three elms and the iron bridge on the wapsi on the 20th, these fish were all between 16 and 19 inches caught on crawdad cranks and jigs tipped with half a nightcrawler. The turkey has has a algae bloom the water is stained below elkader that was over a week ago don't know how it is right now. mike

Rock & Sioux

Two nice rivers here in the extreme nw corner of Iowa. The Rock river about a mile southeast of me is a nice paddle with a moderate current. Lots of trees so hardly ever seems like you are paddling through farm country. Right now because of extreme dry conditions the river is really low and you might have to pull your way through the low spots.

The Sioux river which is four miles west of me also is a nice paddle. The current is very slow and with a lot of sharp bends a short distance as the crow flies makes for a lot of miles with a canoe. More information on the area from Larchwood to Sioux City can be found here http://www.state.ia.us/government/dnr/organiza/ppd/canoe/bigsioux.pdf

UIR

I have been doing the Upper Iowa for 40 years - never get tired of it! It's great in the Spring and Fall when the traffic is low but it can be a lot of fun when it's full of paddlers.

favorite river

My family has rented canoes and paddled the upper iowa 3 or 4 times. We loved it so much we all went and purchased some used canoes of our own. This year we went to Monticello and canoed the Maquoketa river. We have also paddled the Skunk near Oskaloose. I would like to paddle the Turkey River next year so any hints would be greatly appreciated.
