I ame close to paddling the Upper Iowa this spring but stayed on the Root in MN instead. I am seriously thinking about it next spring. I purchased an older book on the Upper Iowa river (I don't have it here but I think it was published by Luther Col. about 1970). What other resources are worth looking into?

Canoeing is merely an interruption in trip planning.
just do a web search. I also believe a new floaters guide for UIR just came out - I think it's a fold out like a brochure with maps and info. There is also a book about paddling iowa rivers coming out in the first part of 04. The DNR web site also has some ok info as well. Or just ask Sea2 who posted here as well - I think he lives near the river.
The following is from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation website (inhf.org) :
NEW IN AUGUST 2003: We now have new maps of the Upper Iowa River. Designed for canoeists, the maps show river features plus have lots of information about area attractions. The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation helped sponsor this publication, and this map is free if you pick it up in our office. Or send in $1.50 for postage and handling to INHF at 505 Fifth Avenue, Suite 444, Des Moines, IA 50309 to have one mailed to you.
