Tentative 16-21 mile float on the Maquoketa River Saturday October 23. Put in near Appleby's, below the dam at Monticello; take out TBD (Hwy136? Canton?). Due to evening commitments, the target is to have shuttle complete and hit the water at 9:00 AM.
I'm initiating this string on behalf of Nick, KJ, and myself, hoping that other may be interested. Anticipating continued nice weather and fall colors.
I'm Interested in The Maquoketa Stretch from Supples Bridge to Royertown Access (14.4 miles) as a minimum; with 18.8 miles take out @ Morehead Access @ 74th St; east of 82 ave.
I've floated from Appleby's (just down from the Monticello Dam) downstream; with lower levels & it's not fun. From Supples' down; there isn't as long as often farmlands to look at; more cliffs & wooded areas.
I'm also kicking around the idea of floating the IOWA RIVER; Fredonia to Wapello (13.3 miles) & beyond. To the boat ramp @ Oakville (24 miles). This river offers numerous sand islands & large wildlife areas.
This river would be closer to Muscatine; for "that evenings' appointment."
Let's get some discussion on this. Majority rules; as long as I get to float. I'm just greatful to be able to paddle with you wonderful folks.
Like Gregg said "16-20 miles" is an ideal float for me. Count me in, whereever the float is. ;<)
Paddling the Iowa River on the 23rd would be fine with me. I'd have to get on the road a little earlier, if we're still planning to hit the water at 9 AM, but it's certainly do-able.
Since we are considering rivers other than the Maquoketa, which might interest other paddlers, I opened a new thread, "Oct 23 River Paddle," on which we can continue this discussion. Hope the effort to simplify is not too confusing.
