The exact river in Eastern Iowa to be paddled is open to discussion and decision, so thought a new thread would be appropriate. Both the Maquoketa and Iowa rivers are under consideration. So far, it's still Nick, KJ, and Gregg, but we'll hope for good weather and more paddlers. We typically paddle 16-20 miles, but some folks may just want a piece of this. Schedules are still pushing us toward an early start. For reference, the info from the earlier thread is pasted below.

Maquoketa River Float Oct 23

-----------------------------------------------------

Tentative 16-21 mile float on the Maquoketa River Saturday October 23. Put in near Appleby's, below the dam at Monticello; take out TBD (Hwy136? Canton?). Due to evening commitments, the target is to have shuttle complete and hit the water at 9:00 AM.

I'm initiating this string on behalf of Nick, KJ, and myself, hoping that others may be interested. Anticipating continued nice weather and fall colors.

Floating Saturday 23 October October 9 2004, 1:09 AM

I'm Interested in The Maquoketa Stretch from Supples Bridge to Royertown Access (14.4 miles) as a minimum; with 18.8 miles take out @ Morehead Access @ 74th St; east of 82 ave.
I've floated from Appleby's (just down from the Monticello Dam) downstream; with lower levels & it's not fun. From Supples' down; there isn't as long as often farmlands to look at; more cliffs & wooded areas.

I'm also kicking around the idea of floating the IOWA RIVER; Fredonia to Wapello (13.3 miles) & beyond. To the boat ramp @ Oakville (24 miles). This river offers numerous sand islands & large wildlife areas.
This river would be closer to Muscatine; for "that evenings' appointment."
Let's get some discussion on this. Majority rules; as long as I get to float. I'm just greatful to be able to paddle with you wonderful folks.
Like Gregg said "16-20 miles" is an ideal float for me. Count me in, whereever the float is. ;<)

Iowa's good, too. October 10 2004, 8:38 PM

Paddling the Iowa River on the 23rd would be fine with me. I'd have to get on the road a little earlier, if we're still planning to hit the water at 9 AM, but it's certainly do-able.

oops! accidentlty started new thread!

October 13 2004, 1:13 AM

That's what happens when I stay up s-o-o-o-o late. I didn't follow directions, as Gregg said too.
See " SUGGESTED TWO OPTIONS" thread for October 23 float. I was suppose to add it to this thread. I'll keep it here next time & check back; after I get back from my 3 day weekend float.
Remember, Majority RULES on where we'll float. As agreed. All you, "NEWBIES" come on where Do YOU want TO FLOAT?

Goosehunters?

October 13 2004, 8:21 AM

Are there any areas better avoided due to duck and goose hunters? Doubt they would mistake us for either a duck or goose, but we could be in the fallout area for shot.

Hey guys, I'd suggest staying above the Royertown access to avoid waterfowl hunters. Probably not to big a deal if you go mid day either way. The Iron Bridge to Spragueville is the stretch that get's hit for goose a lot.

The trees are on fire in our area, you'll probably want to paddle this weekend to see a good amount of colors. The 23rd might be a little late.

Good luck.
