A BREAKAWAY group of the religious group Ang Dating Daan of Bro. Eliseo “Eli” Soriano on Friday asked the Bureau of Internal Revenue to investigate the evangelist for an alleged tax evasion.
Albert Miranda of the Mga Tining sa Ilang (MTI) of the “Iglesia ng Dios Kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng Katotohanan,” said Soriano might have even pocketed the assets and properties of their religious group.
“These properties, like a beach resort and parcels of land, are under his name,” he told reporters in a press conference. “It’s against the by-laws of our group and the property are missing.”
The members of the MTI also questioned Soriano’s decision to change the name of their religious institution from the “Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus” to “Bayan ng Katotohanan” in 1993.
Then it became the “Iglesia ng YHWH at ni YHWSA” and now the “Members Church of God International,” which runs the program “Ang Dating Daan.”
“In 1993 we had P65-million worth of assets and property and it became P6.8 million when the name Bayan ng Katotohanan was used in December 1993. Now, the church has zero capital” Miranda said.
Soriano’s properties and businesses, on the other hand, amounted to P1.5 billion but he allegedly failed to pay proper taxes because he uses his religious group to evade tax payment, he added.
Miranda along with the members of the MTI were allegedly ousted by Soriano, their presiding minister, when they started questioning some transactions of the group in 1996.
