PAT ROBERTSON Background: Unknown to some, he is a son of a former United States Senator and a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough. To utter his name in front of the boys in Wall Street would yield an image of the CEO of International Family Entertainment, a publicly traded company that owns The Family Channel, Mary Tyler Moore Publications and The Ice Capades. With media holdings in Asia, the United Kingdom, and Africa, he is also recognized as a global entrepreneur, with a net worth of up to US $1 billion. And ranking alongside Ted Turner and HBO as the top cable operators in the Land of the Free, he has truly verified his status as a major player in the business world. But if there’s one thing that he is most recognized for; it is for his role as the head of his organization. Coalition: An organization boasting of more or less than 1.5 million members. As a well-known televangelist, he has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in American Religion. Marion ‘Pat’ Robertson is all these and more, which results in him being an icon attached to a status of great wealth, power and influence. In the article they interviewed and the chief pilot for Operation Blessing during Robertson’s Zaire period, Robert Hinkle. This is during the time Mr. Pat Robertson was buying diamond mines in Africa. According to the article. “Only one or two of the roughly 40 flights could be considered humanitarian. All the rest of the flights were mining related.” So the kind, yet misguided, souls who were sending money to Operation Blessing thinking they were helping poor hungry Africans were actually helping an American millionaire make more millions! In 1999 Mr. Pat Robertson was trying to make a multimillion-dollar bank deal with the Bank of Scotland. If the proposed deal had gone through, Robertson would have used his millions of viewers as potential bank by telephone customers through a Bank of Scotland subsidiary. This would have brought in yet MORE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS for the “reverend.” However, the deal fell through. It seems pressure was put on the Bank of Scotland to nix the deal because of taped messages from Pat’s 700 Club show. On the show Marion said, “In Europe, the big word is tolerance. Homosexuals are riding high in the media. And in Scotland, you can’t believe how strong the homosexuals are. It’s just unbelievable.” He then referred to Scotland as a “dark land” because of this toleration. Executives see the attack as an underhand move on a business partner. SHOKO ASAHARA

Background: Born Chizuo Matsumoto, Shoko Asahara was born with infantile glaucoma; leaving him blind in his left eye and with only partial sight in his right. Shoko Asahara’s attitude towards religion was not typical for Japanese. Mr. Asahara’s goal was to achieve the ultimate enlightenment. He studied seriously and tried various schools, meditations and approaches to find the way that is really effective. He started teaching yoga in the 1980’s; most of his students eventually becoming his most loyal disciples. Returning from India in 1987, he revealed unto his disciples that he has finally attained enlightenment. Following this, Shoko Asahara changed his name officially and applied for registration of the group ‘Aum Shinrikyo’ (Universal Supreme Truth). Evidences of falsified godliness: It was the 20th of March, 1995; the Tokyo Subway System was attacked with the nerve gas Sarin. Precisely hitting the segment of the subway positioned below Tokyo’s government offices, 12 people died and thousands more suffered from after-effects. Substantial evidences all pointed to Aum Shinrikyo, accusing it of complicity in the attack, with other terror-inducing incidents. Asahara’s group’s facilities were raided as suspected disciples were arrested. The order for Asahara’s arrest followed. Shoko Asahara was held facing 27 murder counts in 13 separate indictments; including counts for the massacre of a family. The prosecution argued that Asahara “gave orders to attack the Tokyo Subway”, in order to “overthrow the government and install himself the position of king of Japan”. ELLEN G. WHITE

Background Ellen Gould Harmon was born November 26, 1827, in Gorham, Maine. Her parents were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal church. She generally was living a normal life until at the age of nine she met an accident. When she recovered and realized that she was then permanently deformed, she became thoroughly melancholic. It was 1840 when she first attended a Methodist camp attending with her parents. And on June 26, 1842, she was baptized in Casco Bay, Portland in the Methodist church. On a trip to Orrington, Maine, she met a 23-year-old Adventist preacher; James White. They got married on August 1846. After studies and alleged visions, James and Ellen White set out a mission to gather their ‘scattered flock’ as they wave the ‘7th Day Adventist’ flag. The years went by with them putting out a number of books of faith. After the death of their leader Elder James White, Ellen White pledged herself to press on and continue in the work of her church. She forbade the eating of meat, and said, “Can we possibly have confidence in ministers who, at tables where flesh is served, join with others in eating it?” and yet secretly she herself ate meat more or less most of her life. –Lake Union Herald, Oct. 4, 1911. 5). Saw an ‘inspired’ vision of the planets and the number of their respective moons, which, in science, proved to be a mere charade: (Jupiter: 60 moons, Saturn: 33 moons, Uranus: 21 moons) “One evening at the conference above mentioned (Topsham, Maine, 1846), in the house of Mr. Curtis, and in the presence of Elder (Captain) Bates, who was yet undecided in regard to these manifestations, Mrs. White, while in vision, began to talk about the stars, giving a glowing description of the rosy-tinted belts which she saw across the surface of some planet, and added, ‘I see four moons.’ ‘Oh,’ said Elder Bates, ‘she is viewing Jupiter.’ Then, having made motions as though traveling through space, she began giving descriptions of belts and rings in their ever-varying beauty, and said, ‘I see eight moons.’ She is describing Saturn.’ Next came a description of Uranus with is Six moons, then a wonderful description of the ‘opening heavens.’ (“The Great Second Advent Movement,’ page 258, Elder J.N. CHARLES TAZE RUSSEL Background On February 16, 1852, Charles Taze Russel, founder of Jehova’s Witnesses, was born into Presbyterian parents. However, at the age of fifteen, he joined a Congregational Church. Bothered by doctrines regarding predestination and eternal punishment, he became a skeptic and disbelieved the Bible a few years later (p. 224 Hoekema, Anthony. 1963. The Four Major Cults. Grand Rapids: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.). His unstable faith was re-established when he dropped in on a Second Day Adventist Bible study. Soon after this incident, he organized his own Bible study with a circle of friends who eventually regarded him as their pastor. An enormous prediction by the Adventists resulted in him, with his Bible study group, proclaiming that Christs’s coming would be invisible or spiritual. In time, his publication of Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence ended up in a seven-state-wide congregation numbering to around thirty chapters. Before his death in October of 1916, Russel began writing what is now known as Studies in the Scriptures, a sacred text. But when under oath in the court at Hamilton, Ontario, he was asked, “Do you know Greek?” He replied, “Oh yes.” When handed a Greek New Testament, he proved unable to read the letters of the Greek alphabet. “Now,” asked Mr. Staunton, “are you familiar with the Greek language?” Russell unblushingly answered, “No.” He then admitted that he knew neither Latin nor Hebrew. JOSEPH SMITH

Background: Joseph Smith (1805-1844) claimed to have had several “heavenly visitations” beginning in 1820. He says he was told that all existing Churches were in error and he would be the one to restore the true Church on earth. The angel Moroni led Smith to Manchester, New York where he found a book written on gold plated buried in a hill left there by Mormon, and ancient prophet. A “seer stone” later given to Smith enabled him to translate the writings resembling hieroglyphics. This book contained the history of ancient North Americans, specifically Jews who fled Jerusalem around 600 B.C. and sailed in an ark. Eleven others claimed to have seen this book before he returned it to the hill. John the Baptist supposedly conferred on Smith and his scribe the “ priesthood of Aaron” referring to the Old Testament ministry of Aaron, Moses brother, in the temple of ancient Israel. In 1829, Peter, James and John allegedly bestowed on them the “priesthood of Melchizedek” and gave the “keys of apostleship”. A year later, in 1830 at Fayette, New York, Smith organized the movement, which soon would become Latter Day Saints. Evidences of falsified godliness 1). Practiced and preached polygamy (A marital practice in which one man marries more than one woman) – Doctrines and Covenants 132: 61-62 2). Taught that destruction would befall any wife who doesn’t consent to her man acquiring additional wives – Doctrines and Covenants 132:64. 3). As Mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois, ignored the ‘freedom of the press’ and burnt down the Nauvoo Expositor-a publication that exposed his iniquities both as Mayor and leader of a church-after only one edition. “You are here commanded to destroy the printing press from whence issues the Nauvoo Expositor, and pi the type of said printing establishment in the street, and burn all the Expositors… if resistance be offered to your execution of this order by the owners or others, demolish the house… fail not to execute this order without delay, and make due return hereon.” “By order of the City Council, JOSEPH SMITH. My poor, dear brother Hyrum!’ He, however, instantly arose, and with a firm, quick step, and a determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by Brother Wheelock from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times; only three of the barrels, however, were discharged. JIM JONES

Background. James Warrn Jones (1931-1978) was born to a working class family at the height of the Great Depression. A neighbor took him to a Pentecostal church services as a child, and this undoubtedly shaped his understanding of worship as an intensely emotional experience. What emerged from these influences was a self-styled theology that combined aspects of Pentecostalism with social idealism. In September of 1954, Jones was invited to preach at the Laurel Street Tabernacle in Indianapolis, Indiana, an Assemblies of God church within the Pentecostal tradition. Faced with the choice of changing his message of leaving the church, Jones decided to form a new church with several members from the Tabernacle who appreciated his commitment to social justice for poor and working class people of all races. On 4 April 1955, the small group incorporated the Wings of Deliverance; a year later, they re-incorporated and renamed their organization Peoples Temple – Hall, John R. (1979). “Apocalypse at Jonestown.” Society 16 (6): 52-61. Hall 1987: 43. Evidences of falsified godliness In November of 1978, US Congressman Leo Ryan visited Jonestown, the People’s Temple headquarters, to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by the group’s authorities. Before departure, Ryan and his group were murdered at Jonestown. Viciously gunned down; Rep. Ryans head was blown off by a shotgun. On November 18, 1978 Jim Jones and 911 of his followers committed suicide or were murdered. Initial reports said the members drank Kool-Aid laced with cyanide, but a report from the Guyanese coroner said that hundreds of the bodies shed needle marks, indicating foul play. “In San Francisco,” a survivor said, “he started throwing the Bible away. He threw away the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, Noah’s Ark…. Jim did get a shipment of Gideon Bibles in Guyana. But when the toilet paper ran out, he told us to use the leaf of the Bible.
