Fake or not? that is the question

PETCHI

Please gentlemen, I need your help

I have bought yesterday the handcuffs below.
I send the photo this morning to a friend of mine collector too. He is telling me that it could be a fake. I do not agree with him but...now I am not sure. He leaves me in a state of uncertainty.
So I need an experienced collector to give me some informations about it.
I think that it is an HIATTS model
The model is not drawn on the vintage box. My friend thinks that it is suspicious
What are you thinking about my new model?

Thanks so mutch for your help

Hi Petchi,

I think that it is an original Hiatt flexible Darby.

You can compare it with Joe's

Best regards,
Guenter

Petchi,

Here is a pic of my example. It is marked Hiatt although I do have others that look almost the same and without the Hiatt named stamped in them.

The fakes are actually pretty good copies, but how I tell the difference is by the angled connector between the lock tube and the first link. The angle is smaller on the fakes and is not as long. The swivel is much more primitive or crude on the fakes as well. The key is also a clue. The real McCoy is much nicer in appearance its inferior import.

Thanks you very very much ATAME and MARK for your kind answers

I am reassure and of course very happy by this purchase. I was looking this model for a long time. Of course as you know I have paid $630. I do not know if it is more than the real value: Probably du to the original box...

Hiatt Flexible cuffs

I think they are fine. Hiatt had the flexible cuffs listed in their advertisements in the 1950s and that is a 1950s box.

I agree that they are Hiatt and the box matches the cuffs. I've included a picture of 4 flexibles to add some other points. The KUB and Victor copies(top cuff in picture) have the cast angled piece at the end of the lock tube.
They are very large and heavy and thick compared to the more diminuitive Hiatt. The 2nd cuff down is the Indian copy, which is also large and clunky and thick, but the piece at the end of the lock tube comes off at about 90 degrees and is folded over instead of cast with the lock tube.
The bottom 2 cuffs are both Hiatt. The third cuff down is marked HIATT 10 and has the broad arrow. It came from Australia and was probobally made there or in India with contract labor. Except for the key, which is similar to the Indian made cuff, the dimensions are the same as the 1950's flrxible, but the keys are not interchangable. The bottom cuff appears identical to the one in Petchi's picture.

I have a unplated version with an older key.
Both cuffs are stamped "Patent 100 Hiatt". Also the key is stamped "100"
