I've just printed the last batch of the book I put
together on Joseph Lorey, and the Lorey handcuff.
I posted 7 on ebay, and sold 4 off-ebay and one on.
I'll be pulling the auction soon, and if anyone is
interested, drop me a line. $30.00 postage paid
if off-ebay. $30.00 plus postage if on ebay.
It includes the following. The article as it will appear
in the Handcuff annual, two photos of Lorey, death certicficate, copies of news article from 1912, about 25
pages of legal material pertaining to his pardon application, conduct as a prisoner, etc... All the research material I found on him! Prison census records
and the whole nine yards.
Joe Lorey invented the Lorey Combination handcuff and patented it in 1912, while a prisoner at San Quentin.
He was in for murder. He was a machinist before, and in prison. He was paroled, and then violated parole for attempeted murder. He built the handcuff while a prisoner to stump a would-be handcuff artist (possibly Houdini). A story almost too-good-to-be-true. Only 21 copies were printed in total, and no more will be done. So, should anyone be interested please drop me a line.
John's book is very well done. The story it tells is fascinating. Most of us will never have a chance to own a Lorey handcuff, but any collector of American handcuffs will enjoy the story.
Joe
P.S. John. When they make the movie? Who should play the part of Joe Lorey?

Just finished reading the book and recommend to any collector. John did a great deal of work and put together a most interesting story. We now know more about a handcuff inventer, which for this collector, is more than we know about most of the others.

I really enjoyed reading John's "Lorey book" - so much information about such a rare mysterious handcuff. Great job, John!
The several clear photos of the different Lorey variations was worth the price of the book.
No only is the cuff itself of much interest...but so is "THE MAN" (Joseph Lorey) behind the cuff - a great story.

JOHN DO YOU THINK THE 4 WHEEL WAS A PROTOTYPE TO THE SIX? (question asked above)
_____________________________________________________________________________
---John speculates in his book that the 4-wheel version was the IMPROVED version, and that it came AFTER the 6-wheel model.
Why? - because the 4-wheel model would be easier/quicker for the officer to dial than the 6 wheels. Also, the 4-wheel model had a knurled edge along it's lock body, providing a better finger grip on the cuffs (the 6-wheel model had a smooth edge).

I too, picked up a copy from John and found it both interesting and easy to read. Good job, John.
I think Joe Fox should play Lorey in the movie adaptation.
John, question I forgot to ask you when we talked last, so I'll ask it here. Do you think it was possible to change the relative order of the number wheels so that the combination could be changed?
Brad
Changing combination
July 17 2008, 10:16 PM
At least one of the two lorey's I didn't play with had
different combinations on both sides. Same numbers, but
different order. Once the wheels are removed, you simply
change the order of the wheels by reinserting them into
the lock body in a different order and you have a different
combination. So, yes, in a sense the combination is
changeable.
Thanks for kind comments from all of you, and especially to
Joe Fox for suggesting I research Joseph Lorey.

Hi John,
I received my copy just over an hour ago & have just finished it. I just couldn't put it down (apart from making a coffee).
A very interesting & informative read. I commend you for all your time consuming research & a well compiled book.
