Looking for Rare Nippers

April 6 2009 at 8:02 AM

The next Handcuff Annual (yes there will be one) will feature a major survey of nippers. I am trying to track down as many examples of patented American nippers as I can. I already have pictures from Michael, Stan and Yossie of various rare nippers in their collections and I am looking for more.

Here are three particular nippers of interest.

This nipper was patented by W L Lightbrown (#365614) in 1887. The picture is taken from one of Joe Tanner's old listings. (thanks Joe.)

This nipper was patented by DeWitt C Alden (#372836) in 1884. The picture is also taken from same Joe Tanner listings.

This nipper was patented by A. Mercer (#832143) in 1906. An advertisement for this nipper under the name Hercules is shown in Alex Nichols's book.

If anyone has anyone of these nippers (perhaps you bought the one Joe Tanner had for sale) I would very much appreciate receiving a nice set of photographs for the annual.

If you have any other nipper that you consider rare and suitable for the annual then send that along as well. I have quite a few now, but who knows what I have missed?

Many of the US patented nippers were likely never manufactured. It would be great to have a comprehensive list of those that were. You never know when they will turn up. On eBay I just found a chain nipper patented by Leon Brown (#536067) in 1895.

Thanks to all who already have contributed pictures and thank in advance to anyone else who can contribute.

Joe
