Best,

Congratulations, Pat!

I wonder what the story is on these handcuffs. I have seen the same picture as you have, about a year ago. The cuffs must have been made by Heinrich Hagge in 1977 or 1978 but the question is why they are 'mirrored' and unmarked? Was it some kind of prototype or maybe a special order?

The first Deutsche Polizei models by August Schwarz were 'mirrored'. Since 1950 the Deutsche Polizei's are made the 'normal' way; until the 70's by Carl Reher and since 1977 by Hagge. Later on, Hagge also produced a 'mirrored' version, known als the Model A, but with common Deutsche Polizei markings and double lock mechanism.

During WWII the markings on the Schwarz models changed at first and later on also unmarked models were made until 1944. All postwar Deutsche Polizei's are marked, except the newest models in alu and black, wich are custom made for the Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Dirk

Hi again,

the cuffs come from Finland, right? May it be possible that these cuffs were a kind of sample, for the police in Finland perhaps, and that they did not want to have any German writing on them?

A very good find anyway!

Best wishes,

Michael

What is so different about these then a regular pair?

I'm the seller...

May 15 2009, 3:29 PM

Hi

I'm the seller of these cuffs. I bought them from here Finland with some other handcuffs from a guy, who also auctioned some stuff that to me looked like, that he had bought all from some police station auction. I saw newspaper article about similar event and there were also old handcuffs sold (there was photo). I hope that I see that kind of event advertised someday...

But some years ago I bought similar handcuff, which I still have to myself, from antique dealer who had bought it from guy who, said it's Dutch handcuff. When I saw it first time, I thought also it's Deutche Polizei cuff.

But... Then I looked Alex Nichols book Handcuffs page 125. There is LIPS handcuff (from The Netherlans) with similar "curve", but with double locking lever.

Then I send photo of handcuffs some collectors and got answers maybe Deutche Polizei, maybe LIPS.

Dirk can't saw same photo year ago because I took it 5.5.2009 for eBay auction (and I didn't have those two cuffs year ago), but maybe he saw the photo that I send to couple collectors.

Michael may be right, that maybe cuffs were sample "batch" to Finnish police. That would make sense. I don't know. But from Germany or from The Netherlands?

If anybody have some information, I would also glad to know.

Jari

It was not the same picture I saw about a year ago. It was a large picture showing a pair of handcuffs that looked exactly like the ones Pat bought.

Interesting story: I did not know they were coming from Finland.

Dirk

About the handcuff keys ..

May 15 2009, 5:32 PM

Congrats on your purchase handboeienfreak.

I saw the auction for the cuffs and keys and noticed that the seller descibed two (2) of the

keys as being broken. Do you estimate this to be because the keys are made of inferior metal or

are the locks of the handcuffs too heavy duty or stiff and caused breakage of the key bits?

Best regards, K

also for dutch arrest teams they made A special black lips cuff
these cuffs have special springs who are made not A hard click
