A new handcuff I invented.

Below is pictured a prototype handcuff I invented and designed in 2007 for a well known US maker/distributor of handcuffs.

I cannot release many more details right now but I will say that the new cuff is slated to go into production in the coming year.

There are permanently attatched "sliders" that move to either side on the cuff body and block the keyholes.

The insertion of a Martin link from a belly chain ensures the sliders will not move back and expose the keyway.

This is a high security transport cuff.

Hi Steve,

very interesting design! Do you have a prototype of these for sale?

Best,

Michael

Thank you

Hi Michael and thank you.

The picture I posted is of the first model protoype which is currently in the hands of the company I created the design for.

The final production model will no doubt incorporate a number of slight changes I have since made to improve the design.

When I get the final word when these are going into production I will then be free to announce who is the seller/manufactuer and where they can be had.

Cheers, Steve

That's a brilliant idea, they look fascinating.
Hope it won't be too long before we learn who - when - and how much.

My handcuff

Thank you for the kind words.

My idea for this handcuff stemmed from me, as usual, seeing a problem with the lack of security offered by the "Universal key" and wanting to do something about it.

While I am aware that there are transport boxes out there that address this problem, including one invented by myself and currently on the market, I wanted to create a handcuff that had this sort of feature built in and one where the transport box would not be an add on but would be a permanent fixture on the cuff frame.

My inital design was for a totally rigid "Speedcuff" type of restraint but this hinged model is in some ways more flexible and does in fact fold flat for carrying.

On the new version I am working on the sliders are wider and when both are slid to one side the hinge becomes locked and the cuff takes on the properties of the Hiatt "Ultimate Handcuff."

The manufacturer Steve is refering to is Hiatt-Thompson. They were showing this prototype off at the last Shot Show and are in their new literature for future production.

Are Thompson Handcuffs to produce them?

Tom - don't know whether you were at the Show, do you have any pics of the prototype? I can't find anything about these on their website.

Incidentally, Hiatt-Thompson have now changed their name to Thompson Handcuffs & Restraint International, although they seem to be using the same website that still contains references to "Hiatt". The "old" website address takes you to the "new" site (though not so sure it's all that new!) - the address is:

I did not get any photos but in my most recent order from them (2 months ago) I was sent a color brochure that has the same photo that Steve shows on his post of the device. I am sure if you call them you can get a copy of the brochure.
