"Antique Neck, Hands , Ankle Shackles! Real Deal!"

June 8 2009 at 8:56 PM

Here is another mysterious shackle set. This one just posted on eBay here:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250439614786

The pieces seems to be authentic. However, they were chopped apart and assembled into this:

There are more pictures on the listing. How common is this?

Pity

No one even bothered to weld the links they cut.

Still, someone got an AMAZING deal on a Bean collar and leg irons.

I always wonder why anyone would put a "buy it now" on a piece like this and sell it for much less than it would bring at auction. The Bean Collar is extremely rare.

Wonder who the lucky person was who got them and not a problem to TIG weld those links together....

So, what happened if a cop put this on a detainee, got it too tight and while the perp

starts turning blue the key gets jammed in the lock?

Is this why the use of this type of restraint was so "short lived" ??

Pardon the pun ...

It's been awhile ..

Wasn't it 1 or 2 years ago since the last Bean Collar came up on 3Bay?

And didn't the seller end the auction early and who knows what buyer ended up with the goods?

there back

The auction is back on, I just bid on them Clyde

This is yet another case

Likely as not, someone who knows the value of these things and did not win them with the buy it now e mailed the seller and told him what he really has.

Hence the relisting.

I did not win them nor would I bid, (because I collect ancient hand forged restraints), but it really is galling that some people feel the need to step in and ruin the chances others have to get a bargain by contacting the seller and offering this sort of "advice".

Usually, the people who do so do not even plan on bidding themselves but just cannot stand that anyone else would get such a good bargain.

I have seen it happen time and time again.

If I were the guy who initially won them with the buy it now I would be royally pissed right about now.

Bidding has ended on the re listed item AGAIN. This guy should be removed from ebay. Thant twice removed in less than one day.

Once again...

Blame it on people blabbing to him how rare it is or making him piles of offers to end his auction early and sell outright.

Whoever did any of the above is the reason dollar signs are now in the seller's eyes.

Well done.

Hello everybody,

how rare is such a Bean neck collar? Are there less pieces known than McKenzie Mitts?

And was it manufactured solely as a combination with Bean (Patrolman/Prison) handcuffs or also as collar only?

Best regards,
Guenter

Bean Collar

June 14 2009, 10:48 AM

Hello Atame.

The Bean collar is a very rare restraint.

In Bean advertising it was offered with attatched cuffs fixed to it with short lengths of chain and was promoted as an "alternative" to upper body restraints such as straitjackets.

I have no idea how many are actually out there but they are very rare. In my 30 or so years of collecting I have owned/seen in person only one, minus the cuffs.

No doubt the design was not popular and, as has been said here before, it did not have a double lock and it's nasty ability to tighten on a prisoner until choking ensued was likely why not many were made.

Although it was marketed with attatched cuffs, I imagine the Bean people would have sold the collar in any configuration a customer wanted, i.e. with a lead chain attatched, etc.

Cheers, Steve

Thank you fort e reply, Steve.

What do you think is the value of:
a) only the collar
b) collar and handcuffs combination

Best regards,
Guenter
