I agree with your "sense of scale" comment. I was thinking the exact same thing when I was taking those photos. And even more so when I got home to edit them. Those rock formations were big, but it's hard to tell with a bird or person out there on the rocks.
I've had the D300 for a little more than a year and I like it a lot. Hight ISO is very good and it focuses fast and accurately. Metering and color are good too. You probably don't recognize me because I don't come around here much anymore, but I'm an old timer on this forum. I started with the Minolta DiMage 5 many years ago. The camera impressed me so much that I stuck with Minolta and traded up over the years (7i, 7Hi, A2, 7D, Sony a100). Even though I'm shooting a Nikon D300 now, I have a Minolta A200 that I bought used off eBay recently for sentimental value. I use the A200 to take product shots for my eBay auctions.
