D300 sails to Bermuda and back

I just got back from a cruise to Bermuda about 3 weeks ago. Here are some photos from my trip. I didn't take too many photos since I was too busy soaking up the sun, the pink sand and the turquoise blue water! In order to travel light (and because the cruise ship cabin was so tiny) I only brought my Nikon D300 and 24-120mm VR lens. In retrospect, it would have been nice to have my 14-24mm lens too.

Warren

I'm impressed...

Warren, I'm impressed.

That's a great selection of images.

My only 'constructive criticism' would be that those images with only rocks/sea - with no other objects, people etc, they want something to give more of sense of scale.

The image with the two guys at the top of the rock works much the better for this reason.

All good images regardless - and thanks for taking the time to post them for us.

How long have you had the D300 for, and what camera did it replace?

I'm an old Minolta guy

I agree with your "sense of scale" comment. I was thinking the exact same thing when I was taking those photos. And even more so when I got home to edit them. Those rock formations were big, but it's hard to tell with a bird or person out there on the rocks.

I've had the D300 for a little more than a year and I like it a lot. Hight ISO is very good and it focuses fast and accurately. Metering and color are good too. You probably don't recognize me because I don't come around here much anymore, but I'm an old timer on this forum. I started with the Minolta DiMage 5 many years ago. The camera impressed me so much that I stuck with Minolta and traded up over the years (7i, 7Hi, A2, 7D, Sony a100). Even though I'm shooting a Nikon D300 now, I have a Minolta A200 that I bought used off eBay recently for sentimental value. I use the A200 to take product shots for my eBay auctions.

What equipment are you using Mark?

Warren

Recently traded Canon 350D (XT) to Nikon D90, but...

LOL - of course I know you well on the forum! Famed for your 'family Christmas card' seasonal offerings etc, amongst others.

I had just wondered what camera you had immediately before you moved onto the rather fine D300 - from your message that must have been the Sony A100. It's difficult to keep track of everybody's camera timelines, but it's interesting to see.

My 'digital' timeline...

Oct 2001 - Minolta Dimage 7
Sep 2003 - Minolta Dimage A1
Dec 2005 - Canon 350D (Rebel XT)
Mar 2008 - Canon G6 (eBay purchase)
Apr 2009 - Nikon D90

...I still have my Dimage 7 (will never my first digital), Canon G6 and of course the Nikon D90 (and I've a couple of frivalent eBay purchases that I've not really used - Canon Ixus 400 & Canon S50).

I hadn't particularly intended to buy the Nikon, as having a few Canon fit accesories with my 350D I was more likely to upgrade along Canon DSLRs.

My brother had decided the D90 he'd had for only a few months was really too big+heavy than he cared to be lugging around, and he offered it to me for a very good price. At first I wasn't too interested - I tended to prefer Canon, I'd have to sell my 350D kit, and the employment/financial situation was uncertain etc, etc. Nevertheless, a couple of months later I casually re-offered to trade part cash and part the 350D & kit lens (so he'd have to offload the Canon himself), and although he had turned that down previously, this time it was a deal.

Now I have something of a dilemna - I think the D90 is a really fine & fantastic camera - but I still think I prefer Canon cameras in general, and I still have my Canon flash unit and Canon fit Sigma lens. So in the long run, I suspect that I may end up selling the D90 and getting something like a Canon 50D (or its successor), or just conceivably the 7D if its price ever drops at least -30% or more here in the U.K.

I'm also very keen on the new Canon G11, as a more compact alternative to pair up with a DSLR - hence the desire to maybe trade back to the Canon DSLR line, because then they can both share the same flash gun, and deal with similar user menus etc.

good stuff

Nice images, Warren. I just bought a D300s a month ago, so we have virtually the same camera. So far, I'm pleased with it. I shot an event this last Sunday with it and it did well. Haven't had a chance to do my usual musicals with it, but that's coming up in a couple of weeks. I think the low noise at high ISO's is going to be very nice.
