Response to The key question
DA, I'm sure you remember when Bush's popularity was in the 90%+ range, after 9/11. People have short memories. They react to recent events, recent things they've heard in the mostly-negative media blitzkrieg.
The Americans have been taking it to the insurgents all week, and the zone of conflict has been narrowing, though fighting is intense. If we keep the pressure on there, pacify those hot-spots, continue to rebuild Iraq, prosecute the guilty in the Abu Ghraib fiasco, beef up the troop-strength for the next few months, those poll-numbers can turn around in a hurry.
Plus, as we all know, the Americans have al-Zarqawi and bin Laden in a hot-box, waiting to be brought out for the final days run-up to the election. The CIA men who murdered Berg will be offing more Israeli/American double-agents, for the benefit of the McCameras, helping to further villainize the enemy freedom-fighters.
On to Damascus!
