Response to Hockey's not a plaster-saint utopia...
>>>Just occurred to me...why are the Lakers, called the Lakers?
Well, I'm sure you know the Lakers came from Minneapolis in 1960. Why the name didn't change is beyond me. But those were different times and people probably didn't care too much what the hell the name was.
As to the gangsta thing: All I know is that most hockey players are approachable to most fans and I haven't got that impression from Bball players in MANY years. I went to a summer league game once here locally that had a few NBA players (lower level). All you saw everywhere on these guys were their aunterage (sp?), cell phones and large jewelery.
That VERY same day on the way home from this "event" I stopped by a local dumpy ice rink and met Matty Norstrom. This was about a week into the Kings training camp and Nors was not attending since he hadn't signed his contract yet (this was in 1999 I think). Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet and very down to earth.
I just found the contrast between the different players rather astonishing.
