This jibes with the evolving story of Kerry's political-ambitions, and how he eventually decided, even though he was against the war to begin with, that it would look good on his resume if he actually saw some time near the action in Vietnam. At the time he applied for the Swift Boat duty, they were being used outside the fighting-zones...much to his dismay, once he got there, they were being sent down the rivers to engage the enemy.
