... about Tony Blair wanting to have an international conference on Islamic extremism and what to do about it. Should be interesting to see how that plays out. Make me realize a little more, and should make some people wonder a little more, about the usefulness (or uselessness) of the UN when we have to start new forums to discuss serious global issues at hand.
Something else that I've noticed in Canada, despite the recent media lashings served to Hillier and Harper, is that when London is bombed and the British PM speaks of terrorists on TV, Canadians listen. Our press never compares Hiller and Harper comments to Tony Blair comments, only Bush. Why? Because in Canada Blair represents our historical emperor and part of what feeds anti-Americanism in Canada is the thought we have our British links and heritage to fall back on as a way of defining ourselves. It's like a mental block, Bush bad Blair good, even though their foreign policies seem quite similar.
I wish the old Queen would speak up on these issues and others going on in Canada, I'd like to hear what she has to say. | |
