Not sure I'd label him 'stupid' though. Some people are driven by constant adventure and high risk (Wall Street, Entrepreneur-ship, etc.). It might be media hype, but this guy also had an inner need to assist others (Peace Corps, Red Cross, etc.). Combine those two and you've got a rational decision (in his head). Many of these 'driven' types are of the mindset that they, and they alone will choose how to live their lives. Unfortunately, he chose is own death too.
