On 21/22 June 1943 a Halifax from 158 Sqdn piloted by Sgt D C Cameron was hit by flak. Four baled out - 2k,2pow. I know the crew. Can anybody identify the aircraft serial and code?

Thanks

Eddie

Problem

October 28 2003, 11:11 PM

This Halifax (I assume) was not actually lost, only 4 baled, 2 killed, presumably the aircraft eventually made a safe landing somewhere... If badly damaged, it would have been written off (Struck off charge) and that could have been up to a month later... Difficult to trace this kite from my own records as they only cover losses by date or aircraft histories by serial number. You will need to gain access to the squadron ORB's to see the order of battle for that night, OR, maybe contact Bill Chorley... OR, maybe someone else on the forum can offer some assistance - this is one of those area's where our database cannot cope

Problem

Thanks Ian for trying.

The aircraft landed at Downham Market with the pilot and two gunners (acting as F/E and Nav)on board. This was their first operational flight and DFM's were awarded.

Problem Solved ????? I hope

November 1 2003, 5:44 PM

Dear Eddie,

On the night of the 21st / 22nd June 1943 Sgt Cameron was flying A-Apple Halifax number JD116. This aircraft had joined the Squadron on the 2nd May 1943 from the Factory. After the Krefeld raid, she remained with the Squadron and operated again on the night of the 9th / 10th July 1943 flown by S/Ldr Williams this time to Gelsenkirchen. She was lost on the night of the 13th / 14th July 1943 on an op to Aachen again in the hands of S/Ldr Williams. The aircraft flew one trip as G-George and 7 as A-Apple.

Hope that this of interest and helps solve the problem.

I have a photograph of F/Sgt Cameron taken on the 29th June 1943 after a bomb fell on his aircraft from another aircraft. Would this be of interest?

Problem solved - for sure

November 2 2003, 12:21 AM

Just what I wanted.

Anything to do with 158 is of interest to me, so yes the pic would be great. I'm trying to build a complete file of all missions, personnel etc for local interest (I live in Yorkshire and keep getting asked questions I can't answer!!)
Feel free to contact me off board if you prefer.

Eddie

Just discovered my mum's uncle was the tail gunner on JD116 who bailed out on 21.6.43. Unfortunately he died.
Sgt Harry Albert Ford.

In the 5 years since I originally posted this message I have discovered all the detail as to who was on the aircraft.

Arthur George Henry Ford (rather than Albert Harry) was actually the Flight Engineer on this aircraft. He and he other two who were killed were on their first Operation.

If you would like further information send me an e mail (click on my name)

Cheers

Eddie
