1663 HCU was at Rufforth. I don't believe there was a 1633 HCU.

1663HCU Rufforth

March 30 2004, 7:55 PM

Hi Ian, my brother 1866298 Sgt. C.A.R. Dummer R.A.F.V.R. was at Rufforth from 1-5-44 - 4-6-44. I have his service record and it states 1663 HCU Rufforth (A). I am researching his career and would like to know whether he did any operations from there. I am told the (A) stands for attached. Once again a million thanks for information and help I have received through 57 Rescue over the past two years. Harold Dummer.

Rufforth

Hi Harold,
Sorry can't offer you much info I'm afraid.
Two things come to mind here though: You need to go to the P.R.O at Kew, Richmond, Surrey & have a look in the O.R.B's for Rufforth - I think they are in the Air 27 section, but I don't know their individual numbers.
Also, you need to get hold of a copy of Brian Mennell's book (excellent as it is!!) as it is about Rufforth & a large section covers 1663 HCU.
Called "Wings Over York - The History of Rufforth Airfield" privately published by Brian in 2002. Brian can be found at the York Gliding Club, which is based at Rufforth. Sadly, I dumped most of my Rufforth notes after my little book went out, but Brian will have the info you seek. He used loads of things from my book to help him with his. The book is excellent!
Hope this little bit helps?
TTFN
Ian

Wings over York

April 8 2004, 10:03 PM

Hi Harold,
In the book, I'm responsible for the following:-
Both maps on page 6 (my very own handiwork!)
Photo bottom of page 8 (Hally in Hangar at night)
Photo on page 10 (Nissen huts)
Photo bottom page 34 (Cadets boarding Halifax)
Photo page 51 bottom (Sgt George Stalker)
Photo page 52 middle (wing weights)
Photo page 69 bottom (JP128 fire)
Photo page 72 bottom (Jp128 damage)
Photo page 73 Top right (JP128 wreck)
Photo page 93 bottom (Control tower)
Story Page 51 George Stalker
Story Page 52 Ralph Farmiloe
Story Page 76 William Pratt
Story Page 76 Trailer fire
It's a pity that a particular Museum got so many individual credits & even got credits for some of the stuff I submitted!
Still, artistic licence, and it's too late to make changes now as the book is finished.
Still, at least you now know which bits I did
By the way... Yes, it is a lovely book which has been well put together & I highly reccomend it to others who pass by here.
TTFN
Ian
