My continuing research into Halifax serial # MZ589 has led me to something interesting. A few months back the Hali-gurus in this group pointed out to me that MZ-589 flew with 426 squadron prior to be being posted to 431 squadron, after obtaining the 426 squadron ORBs this does seem to be the case.
But of course dealing with 60 year od records on microfilm is never simple. Halifax MZ-589 appears in the ORBs when the squadron converts from Lanc IIs to Hali IIIs, it is flown from May 7-22 on 6 different ops, usually by W/Cdr Hamber.
Strangely, the A/c disappears from the ORB's at that point and W/Cdr Hamber then flies MZ689. This seems just a little too bit coincidental for my liking and I'm thinking human error was a factor. A few dates later MZ689 is alos erroneously listed as LK689.
Can anyone here outline the service of MZ689 to see if this was an error or if it really did serve with 426 sqn?
'halifax file' is generally quite useful - but you need to be prepared to do some checking of your own ! there are some glaring errors and omissions in my copy !
