Hi all,
I was wondering if there is any more information about Halifaxes having crashed in Poland. Some years ago I was told that a guy in Poland had dug some Halifax wrecks locally but nothing more was forthcoming unfortunately.
you asked about Halifax losses over Poland.
I am archeologist and historian. I work for Polish Army Museum.
We have in Poland few Halifax's crash sites in supply mission for Polish Home Army and Warsaw Uprising 1944. All are known and described in few books.
I complete now information, pictures etc. for my book about crash sites of these planes.
There are of course a lot of crash sites in the area of town STETTIN (now Szczecin) and POLITZ (Police).
Hi Cees;
Many of these Halifaxes came from 148 Sqn and 1586 Polish Flight, based at Brindisi, Italy. Some of the crew members, of Canadian origin, are included on a plaque erected by the Polish Embassy in Ottawa. This plaque, containing 26 names, is located in Confederation Park in Ottawa. Most of the names are in support of the Warsaw uprising of Aug & Sep 44.
Indeed a lot of Hally's were used on supply dropping missions. I heard some years ago that several Halifaxes had been recovered in Poland with substantial wreckage.
Anyone have more info on this? Wojtek perhaps?
I still need a restorable throttle box for the Halifax cockpit project (very much tongue in cheek)
