Hi

I'm after any information about the loss of Halifax DT 730 (coded KN-B) from Sqaudron 77 that took part in the raid on Leipzig on 3/4 December 1943. The Archives unit at yorkshire Air Museum were able to give me some information which was helpful (thanks Brian) - it crashed at Cloppenburg and there was 1 survivor. Unfortunately my mothers cousin, James Miller, who was a pilot officer (w/op/gunner) was killed and is buried at Becklingen. Wondered if anybody knew any details of the flight, if there was any wreckage or other details of how it was shot down, or what became of the one survivor F/Sgt K.E.Lees, an Air Gunner.

The forum is new to me and I'm amazed at how much detail and information there seems to be around. Links to where there may be photo's from Elvington up to December 1943 would be appreciated, or where there may be luftwaffe records that might relate to the leipzig raid.

Thanks

Halifax DT730, Leipzig Raid

January 16 2006, 5:50 PM

Thanks Paul

The Luftwaffe records on the lesbutler site are truely amazing. I wondered whether this Halifax was shot down by fighter or hit by flak. From the Archives Unit at Elvington it was described as 'crashed' at Cloppenberg. All the fighter claims seem to be round Leipzig, certainly nothing apparant round Cloppenburg which is near the coast, and seems to be off any logical route home. My next logical stepp is to cantact the squadron association as you suggested.

Many thanks

paul.
