Hi

987167 Sgt. Dennis Thomas Frank Doyle

Mission: Hamburg

Aircraft: Halifax II HR874 EY-B

The crew were

Sgt. F.J. Edser (Pilot)
Sgt. H. Mott (Flight Engineer)(POW)
Sgt. S.J. Muldoon (Navigator)(POW)
Sgt. G. Jones (Air Bomber)(POW)
Sgt. P. Hinson (Wireless Operator)
Sgt. A.N. Moore RAAF (Mid Upper Gunner)
Benis Doyle (Rear Gunner)

Sgt. Muldoon had not been with 78 Sqn for very long. On 22/8/43 he had been posted to 1654 Heavy Conversion Unit (it is possible that this was actually 1652 HCU) from No. 158 Squadron. It is possible therefore that this crew were in the very early stages of their operational tour.

I have no information as to the cause of the loss of this aircraft.

Of the 3 who became POW's (the others were all killed)
Muldoon was held at Stalag 4A Hohenstein
There are 2 G. Jones on the POW list and I cannot therefore be certain which camp this particular one was held in but I suspect 4B
Mott was held in Stalag 4B Muhlberg.

As Moore was an Australian it is possible that you may be able to obtain more information from his service record. If you contact me off board I will tell you how to go about this.

It is also possible for the immediate next of kin (or yourself with the consent of that person) to obtain a copy of his service record. If you want to pursue that option, again just contact me.

I hope this helps and good luck with your search

Eddie

G. Jones on HR874 EY-B

June 10 2009, 8:43 PM

Hi

I'm Martyn Jones, son of Grenville Jones who was shot down on Flight HR874 EY-B over Mannheim in September 1943. My dad sadly died on Friday 13 June 2008 and rarely talked about his wartime experiences in the RAF and POW camp.

In coming up to the first anniversary of his death, I've just started doing some research on our family tree and his service record and thought you'd might like a copy of the flight record for this operation. I'll send this in an e-mail to you. I was given this document by Phil Bates at my dad's funeral last year (Phil flew Sterlings and was a POW in IVb too.)

Some information is missing from the record and so I've included it here:

RAF Designation: Sgt Grenville Jones - 1430583
POW Camp: StalagLuft IVb
POW Number: 222
Age: 22 (Born 19/7/21)

My dad was the bomb aimer and not the flight engineer as stated on the document. I'll also attach a picture of him taken in the POW camp.

You've probably already seen this web page, but I'll include it anyway:
http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=2550

Hope this stuff is of some interest to you.

Regards

Msrtyn Jones
