Hi John,

I know that you have put an enormous amount of time and effort into researching the loss of this Halifax and crew to date and I'm sure that there are people who can and will try to help you more.  However, I think you could provide more info about these airmen whose NOK you are searching for in order to save people doing leg work that is unnecessary.  Visiting the CWGC website and looking up their details will possibly give the names of their NOK at time of death and sometimes also an indication of where they lived - you should do that and include it in the post.

Searching for NOK is a very long and time consuming effort - I know, I've done it plenty.  Asking others to assist is great, but don't expect them to do all the leg work.  Most people reading your posts won't bother to go and check on the CWGC to see where the airmen come from, and why would they?  On the other hand, if you provided that info in the post it might prove of interest to someone reading who lives near where one of the men hail from or who recognises one of the names of the next of kin.

Good luck and I really do hope you find who you are looking for.

Linzee

Z5N

May 23 2006, 2:53 PM

John,

Just curious: was the aircraft Z5N serialled MZ913? If so I have a text which pictures her on dispersal. She sported Pipe Rack jammer whip aerials on the wing tips, Airborne Cigar antenna, additional window chutes forward of the bomb bay doors and aft of the H2S cupola. This aircraft also sported a "Jane" motif as nose art. Although bearing the three vertical yellow tail daylight i.d. stripes of No. 4 Group, I believe she served with No. 100 Group Bomber Support from January of '45.

Let me know if this is the a/c and I might be able to scan and send a pic for you.

Inquiry ...

May 23 2006, 5:15 PM

Nice to see you onboard, Harold! Hope you are doing well.

...was speaking with both my Dad's Pilot and WAG fairly recently and they were curious how I knew so much about their service time - told them it was from connecting with some other good ol' boys much like yourself.

Alas being here in Canada it's really hard to access info on RAF personnel so I doubt I can help you much.

Dad's own crew had an WO Aussie MUAG then an RAF MUAG assigned to them at different points. Apparently they had a heck of a time "exchanging" the Aussie as he had a really bad attitude and, as was described to me, "showed up pickled for flights and puked all over everyone's 'chutes" After a few times of this nonsense they managed to plead their case and the last they heard he was Court Marshalled ... Too bad because this was hardly indicative or representative of the calibre of RAAF aircrew. Dad's Skipper said it was bad enough with the Pilot they had let alone to have to tolerate that ....

(Actually his entire crew - to a man- speaks very highly of his ability and skill both in flying their aircraft and at the pubs! They're certain they had the best pilot in the RCAF)

If ever one thought the Canucks were a little crazy apparently the Aussies and New Zealanders had some pretty atypical quirks!

I've been trying for sometime to track down a few details of two members of Dad's crew - a chap from Edinburgh Harry "Jock" Armstrong who was their FE and a chap from London, a William Maltman who was their MUAG. Both were RAF. I imagine both are gone now ...

Strangely with the addition of an additional Bill on their crew there were four out of seven with the same name. Fortunately Dad didn't use his first given name - imagine the possible confusion!

Anyhow I'll see what I can dredge up from a few sources and'll let you know if I have any luck ...

Bob

Sorry, John

Neglected to go back in the posts and determine that your researched Hally was MZ469 - my mistake. MZ913 was also coded Z5 o N. I apologize ...
